A project at Kingstanding Park in Tunbridge Wells required an efficient retaining wall solution for the construction of a new 500,000 sq. ft warehouse and industrial space.
Suttle Piling undertook extensive early contractor involvement (ECI) with customer ISC Contracting to analyse the various geological conditions, simplify the project, and design and install the most efficient and effective solution.
The Suttle Piling team’s ECI design and construct proposals had to take due cognisance of the limited working areas available to construct the retaining walls due to the proximity of protected trees. The solution therefore needed to be space efficient and vibrationless.
A kingpost solution was selected as the most suitable option for the three retaining walls required, formed using galvanised steel kingposts and precast concrete infill panels. This methodology optimised the designated working space, minimised excavation and allowed construction to proceed safely without disturbing the sensitive root structures of the protected trees.
It also required a combination of specialist plant and equipment to address the challenges of the varying ground conditions across the site. Our Klemm 708 CFA rig was used to bore and concrete fill at each location and our 30t Volvo excavator with a Movax sidegrip piling attachment was then deployed to place and manipulate the kingposts within these piles, to a high degree of precision.
One section of the retaining wall required significantly longer and heavier kingposts, requiring a 40t crawler crane to initially lift these into position, after which the Movax precisely positioned the kingpost for final alignment and installation.
A combination of our broad range of owned and operated plant enabled us to deliver this project safely, to the specified quality, on time and with great care in protecting the adjacent trees and environment.
