Suttle Projects recently completed specialist piling works along the River Thames as part of a bridge strengthening project at Oxford Gas Works.
Installing Bottom Drive Piles in a Confined Space
Our team installed 8 bottom drive piles on each side of the river, designed to support a jack-up beam. This beam allowed the bridge to be lifted so that essential strengthening works could be carried out, before being lowered back into place.
The site presented significant space constraints, with the towpath measuring only 1.2 metres wide and a headroom of just 2.3 metres. To overcome this challenge, we employed a D600 bottom-driven mini rig, perfectly suited to fit the limited space while enabling safe and precise pile installation.
Unexpected Discoveries on Site
During site excavation, the team uncovered bones beneath some concrete. Following protocol, the site was immediately cordoned off and the local police were contacted so forensics could investigate. Fortunately, the bones were determined not to be human, and work was able to continue without delay.
