The Langport Embankment in Somerset was experiencing track settlement and general subsidence, putting a key mainline railway at risk. To secure this critical route between London Paddington and Exeter St. Davids, Network Rail appointed Suttle Projects as Principal Contractor to deliver a piling-led stabilisation solution across 1.25km of embankment within a sensitive floodplain environment.
Central to the works was the implementation of an innovative piling methodology that provided deep, long-term stability while minimising environmental impact and operational disruption. Our investment in modern piling technology delivered major programme and cost savings, including the avoidance of 10,000 tonnes of imported granular material, reducing carbon and local traffic impacts. Early design reviews by our in-house team also resolved key issues, such as conflicts with low powerlines, protecting both programme and budget.
