A residential property on the coast was facing a significant erosion risk, as the existing sheet pile sea wall was scouring, causing the garden to encroach into the sea. To safeguard the property, Suttle Piling was appointed to design and install a new sheet pile wall in front of the existing structure.
The solution involved using fibre-reinforced concrete backfill to ensure long-term stability and durability. This approach is expected to extend the life of the sea defence by up to 50 years, providing the property with lasting protection against coastal erosion.
Working under a Marine Management Organisation (MMO) licence, the team faced a tight construction window with challenges including tidal conditions and limited access through private gardens. Careful planning and the use of compact, efficient machinery were crucial. Suttle Projects deployed a 14-tonne Movax from our in-house fleet, which allowed the team to install the sheet piles and place the fibre-reinforced concrete backfill efficiently while minimizing disruption on-site.
Despite an extension to the MMO licence period, proactive communication with stakeholders kept the project on track. By adapting to tidal constraints and site access limitations, the team delivered a high-quality, cost-effective coastal defence on time and within budget, securing long-term protection for the property and giving the client peace of mind.
